Our school had a CNY celeberation on friday. Many of us came in our auspicious red clothing or bright-coloured clothes. The school had a performance lined up fpr us and it included a lion dance performance, a martial arts performance by our schools own WUSHU team, a funny skit by our chinese drama CCA members, a dance by our schools 4Q class and lastly a HCI version of Dont Forget The Lyrics! It was quite interesting for our school to come up with this programme and indeed it was a success! Three cheers to everyone! Happy cny!

In case you are wondering what the title means, let me tell you that it is from a literature book called little ironies of singapore by Catherine Lim. You can ask her any questions about her book at http://catherinelim.com. Anyways, I am here to post about my opinions on who "killed" Adeline. Personally, i feel that adeline was brought to this situation due to overstress. She was a victim of this kind of pressure. It could be also due to peer pressure. The competitive competition is also present now in the education system of singapore. of course, i am not criticising that Singapore's education is not effective, but that it is indeed GOOD, but that due to the high standards and expectations, weaker students might not be able to cope well like adeline in the story. In other countries like America, thier education system is more of an self-study issue, which means that the students have to do alot of reasearch, projects, etc. Likewise, some american kids might not be able to cope well with this kind of system as they might be more dependent on their teacher to help them.
In my opinion, i feel that the education system here can be improved by the teachers not just only teaching the students but also understanding their background, as this might help the students because they would at least know that going to school is not just all about studying, but also they can feel that school is like their "SECOND" home. If necessary, the students that are lagging behind and have a poor family background might need to go through counelling by their teachers. It might help them in one way or the other.

What exactly is education? This question might not even come across our minds even though we attend countless hours of school , tuition and enrichment programs. Education is not just all about school. In the old times, rich people did not attend school or stuff like that. They had this "teacher" called a mentor. A mentor would be assigned to a child and every time the child has a question on his mind e.g. he visits the park and sees a mangrove tree with aerial roots. Then he would ask his Mentor about the tree and his mentor would tell him its origins, which habitat it lives in, etc. Of course, not everyone back then could afford a mentor. Then they would have to go to school. Of course, education can be of educating the essence of the heart, mind and not always knowledge.

In primary school, my school subscribed to this newspaper called "WHAT'S UP". In it , there was one of the articles which introduced us to this website called "Freerice". What exactly is it about? Alright, let me enlighten you on this. Freerice was founded by a non-profit organization aimed to help those people in Africa who live in poverty and fear every day. Just by answering a few vocabulary questions in this website, you actually donate 10 grains of rice to the UN fund. Of course, the rice is donated not from you, but from the organization. So, you get to enhance your vocabulary and also help the poor people in Africa. Please try it out! I added it to my links =>
